Tremble, MySpace! AOL continues apace in its plan to launch an Instant Messenger-based social networking site. Here’s a screenshot from PaidContent’s write-up. Hmm…nice religion, there, “Jedi!”
All kidding aside, what’s the differentiating factor, not including the fact that potential users’ social networks will be built on their AIM buddy lists? Director of key audiences product marketing Kerry Parkins touts the publishing tool for personal page building, which is supopsedly simple to use and makes for a better looking end result.
Could be, rabbit; Greg Sterling agrees, at least, calling AOL’s product “a lot cleaner than the very awkward MySpace profile formatting.” Another strong point: a user’s page will be housed at the decidedly convenient “www.aim.com/[screenname].”
That’s all well and good, but who will take advantage? Steve Rubel has his doubts about the coveted teen market, saying, “On the upside, many teens already use AIM. On the downside, AOL isn’t a cool brand to them.”
