“Was this link useful to you?” That’s the question an AdWords listing asked of Google Blogoscoped reader James Boulton after he clicked on it and pressed the ‘back’ button. The question appears beneath the ad copy in the AdWords box, accompanied by ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ buttons. We haven’t been able to duplicate it, but you can see the screenshot here.
Speaking of feedback… Google is giving the blogosphere plenty to talk about today with the release of - bum bum bum - Google Spreadsheets. The browser-based application isn’t out quite yet, and when it does go live (sometime this evening, says Danny Sullivan) it’ll be in limited beta testing - sign up now, as invitations will be offered first-come, first serve.
Already, though, it’s being touted as a potential Excel-killer. Well, we’ll believe it when we see it; thus far, Outlook has weathered the assault of Gmail and Google Calendar (although we realize the latter has only been out for a short time, it’s integration with Gmail is advancing slowly). We do agree with Sullivan (and others) that it’s smart to put forth simple, web-based alternatives to the increasingly lumbering Office products, but we still see ourselves going for those familiar mainstays when we need heavy lifting - for now.
A quick run-down on the product: you’ll be able to mock up simple spreadsheets, and formatting commands will be similar to desktop apps. It should be compatible with .CSV and .XLS files, and as with Google Calendar, you can select whom to share and edit your Google Spreadsheet files with. In case of sudden ‘net outages, Google auto-saves back-ups of your info, which means that - well, they’ll have your info, so it might be wise to consider what you decide to put in there. Anyway, we’re raring to try it - when do Google Integers come out?
