Google and Ask Do It All For the Children

Written By Reprise Media | June 23, 2006 | Share This |

Today we’ve got news of one engine that’s been criticized for not being careful enough with its underage users and one engine that’s being criticized for being overly strict.

You know what they say - you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of your chickens before they’re…oh never mind. Just read these stories.

First up is Google, who got in trouble right around this time last month for allegedly facilitating the distribution of kiddie porn online.

Today comes the news that the New York state politician who initiated the suit, Jeffrey Toback, will be dropping his claim that the company is promoting the sale of child pornography by advertising through sponsored links.

You can read more in this story on CNET.

Next up is Ask.com, who says it’s OK to ask, just don’t get too personal, OK?

The search engine was recently criticized in this post on the Hammer of Truth blog for blocking a number of terms that could be useful to children and their parents. Among them are phrases like “laws against pedophilia” and “talking to your children about sex”.

Here’s a quote:

“What kills me is that law enforcement could actually be using the same search engines to find and shut down child porn sites (or getting them removed from the index on a case-by-case basis). But instead the idea is to scare the search engines into throwing the baby, the tub and all the plumbing out with the bathwater.”

In case you happen to be looking (and we hope you’re not), Google Blogoscoped wants you to know that the Ask filter also blocks out words like “bestiality” and “necrophobia” too. Lovely.
