New-Fashioned Makeover for YahooTube Yahoo! Video

Yahoo! unveiled sweeping changes to its Video page late yesterday, making it possible for users to upload clips directly to the site for the first time and easier to share videos in general.

The changes are intended to make Yahoo! a player in the viral video market. They already lay claim to the largest video index on the web, and augment their crawling with RSS feeds piped in from users as well as “direct feeds from major video publishers.”

Unlike YouTube or AOL, Yahoo! Video imposes no time limit on uploads - just a size restriction of 100 megs. Tabs offer looks at ‘featured’ and ‘popular’ videos, although someone will vet clips for copyright violations or mature content before pushing them out on the Yahoo! Video front page; especially lucky user submissions might be featured on the Yahoo! homepage or elsewhere on Yahoo!’s network. Videos are also organized into ‘channels,’ clip collections originating from the same source; they can be generated by an individual user or entities like iFilm and ABC News.

Emphasizing the site’s new social functions, Yahoo! encourages users to rate whole channels and individual clips on a five star scale, tag clips and collect them on a “My Favorites” page, and share videos via email and Yahoo! Messenger - of course, you’ve got to be signed in to a Yahoo! account to do any of that stuff. That said, you can pretty easily embed videos on external sites; just check out this golf thriller on the Yahoo! Publisher Network Blog.
