You know those dorky guys in your dorm? The ones that crank up the latest tune by Black Eyed Peas or Justin Timberlake and stare oh-so-earnestly into the web cam and sing along?
Yea, those guys.
Well, they’re going to jail. That is, if the RIAA has anything to do with it.
The group has taken issue with the recent glut of karaoke-style performances of popular songs on the internet and has announced it’ll be going after sites like YouTube that host them.
An excerpt from an article appearing yesterday in PCPro UK:
“According to music website Project Opus, the Recording Industry Association of America has sent cease-and-desist letters to YouTube users, demanding that said videos be removed from the site.
Project Opus says that RIAA-member Universal has called for ‘an aggressive stance against amateur video using commercial songs’.
In its favour, the RIAA can cite not only copyright infringement but also the potential negative impact on sales that these videos could have.”
Yes, because we all know that a pimply 14 year in Idaho belting out the latest pop hit holds far more commercial appear than the perfectly coiffed and styled Hollywood hand-fed actress/socialite/musician.
