June 1 marks the date on which the first batch of Scotch whisky was recorded, way back in 1494 - although we’re sure they had distillation in Scotland for much longer. In that spirit (oy), we encourage responsibly imbibing these links:

Sticky situation for AdSense Today, Jen Slegg chronicles the debate about the use of AdSense ads in a “floating layer,” using dhtml technology provided by third party tool developer adimpact. The ad takes the form of a yellow square that looks a lot like a post-it note, and ’sticks’ to the same spot on the screen (often blocking text and even other ads) as the user scrolls. Although it can be turned off, Slegg reports that AdSenseAdvisor considers the ad to be detrimental to the user experience and disallowed by AdSense. In the comments section, however, an adimpact “principal” begs to differ with that assessment.

Meanwhile, back at the lab… The adLab, that is. Microsoft’s research center for developing adCenter tools went live in January, but their site is out in public beta now, says Search Engine Watch. They’ve got 11 ‘demos’ for tools to help with Paid Search, Contextual Advertising, Behavior Targeting, and Emerging Markets (currently, this one seems to be about geotargeting). Play around with Keyword Categorization, Demographic Prediction, or wait around a bit - several more demos are “coming soon.”

“We are [verb, past tense] to receive your resume” Job hunters looking to find work in the search game might be wondering which of the Big 3 engines sends out the most personable computer-generated stock form email to its applicants. Well, Corsin Camichel, posting on the Google Blogoscoped forums, has the answer. Google’s and Microsoft’s letters certainly weren’t impolite, but Yahoo!’s missive left Camichel with the squooshiest feeling. It says the company is “excited,” and calls applicant interest in Yahoo!’s positions “the ultimate compliment.” Hopefully, they don’t blush during interviews.

From our News of the Impossible Department World Cup Fever is gripping (non-USA parts of) the world, and RoboCup World Championship fever is gripping the city of Bremen, Germany. 350 teams of robot builders from across the globe are trying to build android soccer players, with the eventual goal of being able to “whip the human world-champion soccer team by the year 2050.” Finally, a reason to watch soccer! Unfortunately, as this video demonstrates, robots only seem to make soccer look even more boring than when humans are playing it.
