Google Maps Mobile Offering Real Time Traffic

Written By Reprise Media | July 25, 2006 | Share This |

It looks like Google Maps for mobile devices just received a cool update: real-time traffic status is now available for 30 major U.S. metropolitan areas. Yours truly at Reprise Media has jumped on this opportunity to test out the old Blackberry 8700c to see what the buzz is all about.

When I accessed this link from my phone, it pointed me to a page where I was asked to download and install Google Maps Mobile. It turned out that in order to take advantage of this new feature, I needed to re-install the latest version of Google Maps; the previously installed Google Maps on my phone will not automatically update itself. No big deal. I went ahead and installed the latest program, accepted all the legal terms and within a minute, I had the latest version up and running.

I searched for “Los Angeles CA” and within seconds, the map of SoCal appeared before me. Once the option to “View Traffic” was activated, all the freeways received a color coding corresponding to their current traffic conditions. All I’ve got to say is, if you were driving on the 10 Freeway West bound for S. La Cienega Blvd. at 7:28am this morning, I feel sorry for you.

Another feature now available is an option to “Find a Business.” I have also noticed the map loading speed is significantly faster from the previous version. Overall, I have always been pleased with Google Maps on my Blackberry and I find the new features extremely helpful. For more information, go to the FAQ, or check out the Reuters story.

One Response to “Google Maps Mobile Offering Real Time Traffic”

Well, let’s hope they get this right. I don’t know if I can trust Google’s traffic data since Gmail has been sending me someone else’s email since April.
