MySpace #1? Not if Yahoo! Has Anything to Say…

All hail the new king of internet town? New Hitwise data says that MySpace.com is now the most-visited site in the US, reports eWeek, garnering 4.46 percent of all site visits in the nation last week, and eking out a victory over second place Yahoo! Mail, which had 4.42 percent.
But Yahoo! says to wait just a cotton-pickin’ minute. The ‘net giant complains that the Hitwise data misleads, since the online traffic measuring firm counted each of Yahoo!’s numerous domains seperately rather than as one entity. If you add up all the visits to Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! search, Yahoo! Finance, etc., you get a visit share upwards of ten percent. MySpace’s combined properties net “only” 7.3 percent of all US web hits.
Yahoo! also claims more unique visitors, reaches a broader share of the total online audience, and commands far more numerous adherents worldwide, thank-you-very-much. And although MySpace’s total hit number is still impressive, Yahoo!’s users spend significantly more time onsite per visit, a stat prized by advertisers.
However you crunch the numbers, though, there’s one area where MySpace is still the undisputed champeen: social network traffic. MySpace is gargantuan and growing (despite anecdotal reports of ’so over-ness’), with an 80 percent share of that market - compare to second-place Facebook, way back in the pack with an itty-bitty 7.6 percent. And briefly touted MySpace killer AIM Pages? Hello, do you copy?
