Technorati’s growing up so fast. The premiere blog search engine celebrates the big 3 this month, and they’re sporting a brand new look along with several new and improved features.
One thing that’s noticeable right off the bat: Technorati’s learned to tidy its room. The search interface and results pages are a lot less cluttered, a development of which Dave Sifry, posting in the Technorati Blog, seem especially proud. Here’s a snip:
“While we got a lot of positive feedback from bloggers about the core Technorati service, we were increasingly hearing that we weren’t being of equal service to folks who are new to the live web. And because our mantra is to be of service – we set about renovating the Technorati site to make it easier to use for all people, whether they regularly create stuff on the web or not.”
Users are encouraged more than ever to sign in for a ‘personalized’ blog search experience. And in addition to being friendlier to use, Technorati’s worked hard to become better at their meat and potatoes blog search. They say that link counting is improved, and the engine promises to make more frequent visits to blogs in order to keep the results fresh and relevant.
Other improvements include the introduction of sections like Discover (a directory of recent popular blog posts by topic), Popular (lists of the most-linked to recent items) and Favorites (a given users’ most beloved sites). We think Discover’s a good idea, but could use at least one tweak due to a semantic irregularity in the English language: under ‘Sports,’ the top three posts under ‘Soccer’ are about soccer; the top three posts under ‘Football’ are…also about soccer. Great if you like soccer…
Oh, and the makeover isn’t the only birthday present Technorati’s enjoying this month. They had another reason to celebrate a couple weeks back, when they landed 7.6 million clams in a third round of funding (via PaidContent). We hope they sink some of that into the spam elimination capability they’re hinting at…
