Yahoo! to Google: “Don’t Look In There!”

When Google’s legal department started going after publications for using the word “google” as a verb, more than a few folks met the news with smirks or raised eyebrows. ‘Free publicity? No thanks!’ Now Big G’s biggest competitor is doing those incredulous bloggers one better.

As the Yahoo! Search Blog’s Tara Kirchner puts it, “Hello, gift horse, mouth!” She continues:

“Most companies, including ours, spend a great deal of time trying to turn our brands into household names. In fact, we just kicked off a marketing campaign called ‘Your Yahoo! has changed’ that is meant to encourage people to have fun with our brand by creating their own commercials.”

Her example - changing up King Missile’s novelty song “Detatchable Penis” so that it’s instead about a lost “Yahoo!” - “may not be what the brand guys” were looking for, but it acknowledges the reality that “People don’t often do what you want them to do, and brands are more about what consumers think, than what companies want.” It’s also telling folks that when it comes to the Yahoo! name, pretty much anything goes. Be careful what you wish for…
