The French press announced today that “Halloween is Dead“, declaring it “gimmicky” and an “intrusion of commercial interests”. Gimmicky? Psh, obviously. But can you think of a better excuse to take other people’s candy? I suspect that the French resentment is secretly due to their contempt for artifical flavoring, and their overconsumption of handmade pastries has somehow negated the gravitational pull of mini snickers and flavored tootsie rolls. Alas, while the French may not get to enjoy trick-or-treating, they can at least get a taste for the holiday online. Here’s some of the best Halloween stuff on the web:
- Google Scary Stories: Google Book Search has created a special list of history’s most famous scary stories, all available as full-text downloads.
- The Real Thing: Is carbon monoxide poisioning the reason you’re seeing ghosts? This American Life, one of my favorite NPR programs, has a special segment on real-life horror stories and their not-so-mysterious explanations. It’s also available as a podcast, for the frightfully hip.
- Director’s Cut: Make your own Simpsons Episode, with the Treehouse of Horror Video Editor. Or just watch the best mixups from other Simpsons fans.
- Wicked Witch of Germany: If you’ve ever wondered about the origins of Halloween, a group of scholars claim that it was inveted by witches in the Black Forest of Germany.
- Where To Go: GooGhoul is a local search engine for Halloween events in your neighborhood. Or, HalloweenMashup.com has a Google Maps mashup pointing to events in your area. For New Yorkers - check out the Walking Tour of Greenwich Village.
- Like Oil on Water: Bloomberg writes a post on why Halloween and Economists just don’t mix.
- I See Dead People: Ghostresearch.com presents a directory of the best ghost photographs. And in case you missed it, The Metropolitain Museum of Art had an entire special exhibition devoted to ghost photography.
- Poor Kitty: Shelters across the U.S. have banned black cat adoptions on Halloween to help prevent animal cruelty inspired by urban legend.
- Nerd Alert: If you ever wanted to make a Chips-n-Dip tray molded like Han Solo when he was frozen in carbonite (who doesn’t??), GeekZine has a list of ways to GEEKIFY your Halloween party. The number of people actually planning to make Han Solo En’Queso’ed .. now that’s scary.
