When you hold over 60% of a market, i supposed your name is bound to come up in the news. Today it seems like bits and pieces from Google are all over the headlines - nothing huge, but enough interesting stuff to roll into a post:
- Google Sun: New solar panels are being installed on the Googleplex, to eventually supply 1/3rd of the building’s power. Capable of generating 1.6 megawatts of electricity, this will be the “largest customer-owned solar electric system at a corporate site.”
- Frightful, yet Delightful: GooGhoul is a new site that lets you search for halloween venues in your area. Anyone up for the Ghost Tour of Manhattan?
- Kos They Don’t Like It’: Daily Kos has decided to opt out of the news feed - not for copyright reasons, but to boycott the poor quality of Google News search results. From the announcement: “Google News is becoming unusable. They need some serious soul-searching about what they are and what their mission is…I voluntarily asked for Daily Kos to be removed from Google News since it was returning results from this site that quite frankly weren’t up to the sort of standards I expect out of a service offering up credible news.”
- Caught Ad-Handed!: Google Mobile Ads have been spotted in the U.S.
- That’s A Lot of Money: MarketWatch reports that by the end of this year, 25 percent of all U.S. online ad spend will be in the Google bank account. Of the $16 billion generated, Google will take home a full $4 billion –further confirming Google as the “unrivaled king” of search.
