Free Webhosting, 100% of the Ad Revenue

No, it’s not just a holiday promo - Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is giving away everything (”all the software, computing, storage and network access that Web site builders need to create community collaboration sites”) for free through Wikia.com. What’s more, users of the free collaborative tools get to keep 100% of their ad revenue. Wales has not disclosed details of Wikia’s business model, except that “the community will prevail.” This is an interesting experiment in light of Chris Anderson’s “Economics of Abundance“.

Text Heavy

Reuters reports that text messaging is expected to double by 2010. ” Total revenues from text messaging is forecast to grow to $72.5 billion (36.9 billion pounds) in 2010 from $39.5 billion (20.1 billion pounds) in 2005.”

ICANN Approves Dot Asia
Dot Asia will be a regional Top Level Domain that “will provide ‘a clear brand to reach and enrich the broad global community’”. Dot Asia’s approval is part of ICANN’s long term goal to encourage more international participation in the naming process.

iTunes Music Sales Plummeting
According to a recent Forrester Report, “Apple’s iTunes, has experienced a collapse in sales revenues this year.” CD sales also continue to fall, suggesting that users are still downloading music illegally. Apple Insider says the Forrester report is just evidence that “analysts still don’t get iTunes.”

Google Rips Off Yahoo Page
Yesterday, Jeremy Zawodny caught a Google IE7 Update page that is literally the spitting image of Yahoo’s. Google quickly changed their page, but not before Zawodny’s got some amazing screenshots. Sooooo busted.
