TechCrunch points to some interesting data about top bookmarking services and feed readers, compiled by AddThis. Google Bookmarks and Google Reader both show up as overwhelmingly popular, despite the fact that both services have received little promotion to date. Few people even noticed Google Reader until it started releasing data two weeks ago, and caused a 40% jump in everyone’s Feedburner stats.
Eric Ward has a comprehensive post over at Search Engine Land about the increasing importance of these two services. He suggests that getting content into Google Reader and Bookmarks, among other Social Media sites, will soon become an integral part of SEO. Bookmarks and Reader, in particular, weigh into Google’s Personalized Search results.
As Gord Hotchkiss theorizes,
“Right now, link baiting/building, optimization, competitive intelligence and all the rest are aimed at securing a top spot in the organic results. But what happens when there no longer is a “top spot” because every result is personalized, based on your geographic origin, your past search history, your behavior or preferences you’ve shared with the engines. That’s where search is going, through a number of different initiatives…”
The popularity of Google’s Reader and Bookmarking services indicates a) the increasing adoption of RSS and tagging by a mainstream audience and, perhaps more significantly, b) the popularity of Google as the organizing platform for the world’s personal information.
