Google Adds “Hot Trends” For Popular Searches

Google Trends has a new reporting feature, “Hot Trends“, that shows the top 100 most buzz-worthy search terms by day. The new service shows information on traffic volume, related searches, news posts and blog posts for each “hot” term. From the Google Blog,

Google Trends has a new reporting feature, “Hot Trends“, that shows the top 100 most buzz-worthy search terms by day. The new service shows information on traffic volume, related searches, news posts and blog posts for each “hot” term. From the Google Blog,
“Hot Trends aren’t the search terms people look for most often — those are pretty predictable, like [weather] or [games] or perhaps [myspace]. Yes, [sex] too. Instead, the Hot Trends algorithm analyzes millions of searches to find those that are deviating the most relative to their past traffic. And the outcome is the Hot Trends list.”
Search Engine Land has a detailed description of Hot Trends, with analysis on how it might apply to marketers. Because Google provides data on location of search volume beside related search, news, and blog posts, it’s fairly easy to trace certain keywords back to their origin offline.
It’s interesting that almost all of the top 100 terms can be traced to a popular TV show or news story. If nothing else, this really illuminates the lost opportunity for marketers that run television or print commercials without a related search marketing campaign. Though advertisers are getting better at integrating online and offline efforts, few companies put together all the elements necessary to translate interest and buzz into web activity.
