Reports earlier today that Google and Gmail were blocked in Iran were supported by the country’s information secretary, Hamid Shahriari, who said, “I can confirm these sites have been filtered.”

Now, Google has been unblocked, and the Iranian government says the initial block was a mistake:

“Due to an error, the Google site was filtered on Sunday evening but the error was corrected and now Google and its different sites like Gmail can be used,” said an official from the state-run communications company.

No word on what the error was, but Iran is no stranger to Internet censorship (and its Internet users are no strangers to getting around the filters). Earlier this month, Facebook was reportedly banned there. Flickr has also been banned in Iran since early this year, and YouTube has been banned since December of last year.
