Social web browsing/recommendation service StumbleUpon yesterday formally introduced SearchReviews, a feature which layers StumbleUpon ratings on search engine result pages.
SearchReviews had previously been in beta on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. It has now expanded to include more search engines, and the official announcement includes added functionality that makes the service more social. Most notably, StumbleUpon users can now see which of their friends have rated the sites appearing in search results. This should do quite a bit to get users interested in adding friends in the service and recruiting others to join. TechCrunch reports:
“We are doing social search,” says StumbleUpon founder Garrett Camp, “but instead of creating a completely new search engine where you have to change your behavior, you can use the same search engine you use now.”
As social media sites, networks, and plug-ins continue to multiply, integration into popular existing sites will be what sets apart the winners. As Search Engine Journal notes, “It is certainly a good move on the part of StumbleUpon. If you can’t beat the giants, just make something that these giants can make use of.”
