Facebook Going MySpace: Music is Coming

CO-ED Magazine yesterday reported that Facebook will announce Facebook Music next week. The new service will allow artists to create profiles that will function as fan clubs/hubs for the bands’ music, similar to MySpace Music. Mashable explains:

Music labels get a registered sub-domain on Facebook, similar to how applications get sub-domains.

Then Facebook users can essentially connect with musicians as fans, and get access to the media that’s found on individual artists’ pages. This would offer a direct line between artists and fans, for the distribution of music, videos, and images.

Then of course, there would be marketing and media promotion, which sounds like a deeper integration with the upcoming Facebook ad network.

TechCrunch also notes Facebook is working on music download sales:

Facebook is also supposedly working on sales widgets for these pages (to be introduced at a later date) so that artists can sell downloads directly through Facebook. (Watch out iTunes).

Expanding Facebook to non-individuals with Facebook Music branded profiles will make the site much more like MySpace. At the present time, profiles on Facebook are limited to individuals, and branding or marketing on Facebook happens via (expensive) groups and applications. It’s curious that Facebook hasn’t expanded this concept to marketers, who would be all over getting a Facebook subdomain. And if the social network feels like getting altruistic, nonprofits would benefit from this opportunity, too. Perhaps that will come soon, as well.

One Response to “Facebook Going MySpace: Music is Coming”

I like this idea but again, facebook and myspace will soon be exactly the same. Is there enough room for both of them. Have any of you heard of College.com? They claim to be filling the void that facebook opened. Any of you check it out?
