Mobile behemoth Verizon Wireless today announced it is opening its network in 2008 by allowing users to choose non-Verizon phones and applications:
Verizon Wireless today announced that it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon Wireless plans to have this new choice available to customers throughout the country by the end of 2008.
In early 2008, the company will publish the technical standards the development community will need to design products to interface with the Verizon Wireless network. Any device that meets the minimum technical standard will be activated on the network.
This is surely a nod to Google’s Android and the recently formed Open Handset Alliance, even though Verizon has not yet joined that alliance and says any non-Verizon phones on its network will have to be tested and approved in its labs. Users will still have the option of Verizon phones but ZDNet notes the news reinforces the company’s emphasis on its large network:
Simply put, Verizon Wireless is really backing up claims that mobile access is all about the network. The network becomes the big selling point going forward. And if developers flock to the Verizon network the company could maintain its momentum.
Verizon’s open network will likely precipitate widespread change in the American mobile industry, making it more European, because competitors will now have to open their networks.
