Writers’ Strike: The Videos

A lot has been written about the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. If you’ve noticed that most of your late-night shows (Leno, Letterman) are re-runs at the moment, you probably also know it’s because writers are peeved that networks are putting content online, making money from it, but not paying the writers (in a nutshell, that’s the writers’ side). Networks claim they haven’t yet figured out how to monetize.

In tech blog coverage, Henry Blodget at Silicon Alley Insider wrote a post about lack of sympathy for the writers on Wednesday, but Internet outrage bore this clarification and expansion of his argument yesterday. Regardless of what side of the picket line you’re on, though, you’ll probably agree this formula makes sense: social media + angry/bored/out-of-work writers = networks that look like mean hypocrites.

First up, who better than a writer of The Daily Show to explain TV economics? And if that’s not enough, here’s an explanation of “promotional content” from the fine people behind “The Office,” who say they won an Emmy for their webisodes but had a hard time getting the network to shell out the cash for the little statues. The lesson to network execs? Don’t tick off the people you rely on to be funnier and more articulate than you.
