Social Media: Twittering Your Music with Blip.FM

TechCrunch has an interesting post today about Blip.FM making a new beta API available so that developers could add Blip.FM’s functionality to their tools and sites.

Like most good posts it made me curious - I hadn’t tried Blip.FM.  I signed up quickly and found that as advertised, it’s like Twitter for music fans. The interface is very similar to Twitter and it even links you up with your Twitter account so that you can crosspost your Blip posts there. Blip even tells you which other users have Blipped songs by the same artist so you can build a network very quickly. It’s an ever-evolving playlist that becomes the ultimate in custom radio for the masses.

The problem for Blip is the problem that has plagued every free music social media app. How long before the RIAA shuts it down for promoting their artists for free? Do I really want to get attached to a site that may not last past the first wave of buzz?

So my message to Blip is this: Monetize before it’s too late! They’ve already cut a deal with Amazon it seems - songs all have links to buy MP3’s on Amazon’s site.  Next should be  iTunes, the record labels, whoever they can to keep the music free - provide plenty of “Buy Me” links all over.

I’d also recommend that the record labels study the habits of the people using Blip. These are the influencers who determine the next trends. A site like Blip is a prime way to start spreading the word about new artists, just as MySpace has proven to be a powerful incubator.

In the meantime, I’m gonna keep sharing and hoping it takes off, before it gets taken off!
