News Roundup: Google Opens Up, Twitter Clams Up, MySpace Cleans Out

Quite a lot of news has been generated in the last day, so here’s our take on a few of the stories that caught our attention.

Google Gives the Gift of Data

While folks were oooing and aaahing over Google’s attempts to build a profile database the real news to come out of the Googleplex was their release of their Analytics API. This allows marketers and techie wrenchheads to get their elbows dirty with sweet, sweet, Google analytics data in ways that were difficult to do until now. Look for more cool custom third party analytics applications soon.

Could You At Least Warn Us in 140 Characters or Less?

While Google is giving more info celebri-platform Twitter is being accused of holding back – a charge that has dogged facebook and seems to be a rite of passage for online magnet sites. The first stirrings came as limits were being placed on the number of people a user can follow in a day. Immediately app developers were up-in-arms over the move and the lack of forewarning. While the communication void is a problem, if you adding more than 1000 friends a day on Twitter ur either A) a spammer, or B) doing it rong.

The next mini- outrage has been over Twitter’s OAuth, which is still officially in Beta. The OAuth allows for secure information to be shared between apps. Twitter’s was disabled without warning a few days ago and it was only today that Twitterer-in-Chief Biz Stone saw fit to post about the reasons why.

While developers are grumbling about taking their tools elsewhere, as long as Twitter remains simple and easy to build on it will remain one of the most popular platforms for developers to tinker with. Did I mention that their growth rate last month was 131%?

MySpace Deletes High Profiler

As Facebook continues to close in on MySpace for domination in the US, rumors are swirling that parent company News Corp has asked fantastically coiffed CEO Chris DeWolfe not to let the door hit him on the way out. The question now is who will step in to fill his seat. While speculation has swirled over the likes of Jason Calacanis saying “Aloha” to Mahalo in order to…um… say “Aloha” to MySpace our preference is for Fox News teeth-gnasher Glenn Beck. Why Beck? Because he’s like a walking MySpace profile – too much noise and waving of arms and why is it so loud and ugh make it stop!
